When to Schedule Maternity Photos in Seattle: The Best Weeks and Why Timing Matters

"When should I schedule my maternity session?" is one of the questions I hear most often, and it is a good one to ask early.

The short answer: for most pregnancies, the sweet spot is between 28 and 36 weeks. But there is more to it than that, and the specifics matter -- especially if you are carrying multiples, feeling uncomfortable early, or trying to work around Seattle's unpredictable weather.

Here is what I tell every client who asks.

The Best Time for Maternity Photos: 28 to 36 Weeks

Most of my clients schedule their sessions in the early to mid third trimester, and there are good reasons for that window.

By 28 weeks, most people have a clearly visible baby bump that photographs beautifully. You can see the shape, the roundness, the full presence of the pregnancy. Earlier than that, the bump may not show as dramatically in images.

Through weeks 28 to 34 or so, most clients can still move comfortably, shift poses, and stand for stretches of time without feeling completely worn out. That changes closer to the end. By 37 and 38 weeks, many people are exhausted, swollen, and not feeling their best. It is harder to feel comfortable in front of the camera when you can barely sleep and everything aches.

There is also a practical reason not to wait: babies are considered full term at 37 weeks. Deliveries can happen earlier than expected, and I have had clients go into labor before their scheduled session. Getting your portraits done before week 36 means you do not have to worry about missing this window entirely.

What Changes Week by Week

Here is a general sense of what to expect at different stages:

Around 28 weeks: The bump is visible and often beautifully round. Most clients feel relatively good. Energy is often better in this window than it will be later.

28 to 34 weeks: This is the heart of the ideal range. The bump is full and clear, comfort is still manageable, and you have time to schedule without stress.

34 to 36 weeks: Still a great time for portraits, but sessions often require more breaks and modified poses. If you are comfortable, this can produce gorgeous images of a very full bump.

37 weeks and beyond: Doable, but not recommended if you can avoid it. The risk of missing the window increases, and many people are simply too uncomfortable to enjoy the session.

When to Schedule if You Are Expecting Twins or Multiples

If you are carrying twins or multiples, the timeline shifts earlier.

I recommend scheduling between 24 and 32 weeks, depending on how you are feeling. Multiples often arrive sooner, and the physical demands of carrying more than one baby tend to catch up faster. I am a twin mom myself -- my babies arrived at 36 weeks -- so I understand this from both sides.

A good general guideline for multiples:

  • 24 to 28 weeks: if you are already uncomfortable, or your doctor is monitoring closely for preterm labor

  • 28 to 32 weeks: if you feel well and want a fuller, more visibly pregnant look

When in doubt, err on the earlier side. You can always reschedule if needed, but you cannot go back.

How Far in Advance Should You Book?

I recommend booking your session as soon as you enter your second trimester, even if the session itself will not happen for several more weeks.

The most popular spots on my calendar -- weekends, late spring, and early fall -- fill quickly. Booking early gives you the best choice of dates and removes one thing to stress about later.

You do not need to know the exact date when you book. We schedule tentatively around your due date and confirm once you are getting closer.

What If You Are Already Past 36 Weeks?

First, take a breath. You have not missed your chance.

If you are past 36 weeks and have not booked yet, reach out as soon as possible. We can still create beautiful portraits. Sessions at this stage are simply paced differently, with more breaks, simpler poses, and a focus on your comfort above all else.

The most important thing is that you feel safe and supported. That is always the priority.

A Note on Timing and Seattle Weather

Seattle weather is worth factoring into your decision, particularly if you are considering an outdoor session.

From October through June, Seattle is frequently rainy, overcast, and cold. Scheduling an outdoor maternity session in the fall or winter adds a real risk of rescheduling -- and when you are pregnant and already navigating a narrow timing window, rescheduling adds stress you do not need.

My studio eliminates that variable entirely. The session happens regardless of what the weather is doing. The lighting is consistent, the environment is warm, and you do not have to watch a forecast all week hoping for a dry day.

If you are planning your session in the 28 to 36 week window and that falls between October and June, a studio session is almost always the more reliable choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time for maternity photos? For most pregnancies, between 28 and 36 weeks. The bump is clearly visible, most clients are still comfortable enough to enjoy the session, and there is enough buffer before delivery.

Is 32 weeks too early for maternity photos? Not at all. 32 weeks is often an ideal time. The bump is full and visible, and most clients still feel relatively comfortable.

Is 37 weeks too late for maternity photos? It can be risky, since babies are considered full term at 37 weeks and may arrive at any time. If you are already at 37 weeks, book as soon as possible and plan for a relaxed, shorter session.

When should I schedule maternity photos if I am having twins? Between 24 and 32 weeks, depending on your comfort and your doctor's guidance. Multiples often arrive earlier, so the window is shorter.

How far in advance should I book a maternity photographer? Ideally during your second trimester, so you have the best selection of dates in your ideal window.

Does Seattle weather affect maternity photo scheduling? It can, especially for outdoor sessions. Studio sessions are weather-independent and work year-round, which is why many Seattle families choose studio photography regardless of the season.
