Seattle’s Premier Newborn Photographer Since 1999
I began my career as a Seattle newborn photographer in 1999. That’s 27 years of capturing simple, timeless portraits of newborns and their families.
No unnatural posing.
No props.
No trends that will feel dated in ten years.
My studio is a calm, light-filled space where your family can relax while we create images you will cherish forever.
What Makes My Newborn Sessions Different
A Baby-Led Approach to Newborn Photography
I don’t pose newborns into complicated positions.
I don’t force sleepy setups.
I don’t use heavy props or distracting themes.
Instead, I photograph your baby the way they naturally curl, stretch, yawn, and settle.
I want you to recognize your baby in the portraits I create- the same little stretch you saw on their ultrasound, the same furrowed brow you see at home, I capture it all!
You see, I believe newborns are perfect just as they are. They don’t require elaborate props or poses to be adorable.
My role as your newborn photographer is to preserve that perfection in a way that feels natural and timeless.
When to Schedule Your Newborn Session
The ideal time for newborn photography is within the first 5–10 days after birth.
During this window:
Babies are sleepier
They naturally curl into womb-like positions
They are easier to soothe
I recommend booking your newborn session during your second or early third trimester to reserve space on my calendar. We can always adjust the exact date once your baby arrives.
That said, there is no “wrong” time to photograph your baby. If your newborn is older than 10 days, please don’t worry. I photograph babies of all ages and adjust the session to meet them where they are.

My Studio Location
All newborn sessions take place in my North Seattle studio, located at:
310 NW 85th St Seattle, WA 98117
The studio includes:
Light filled studio rooms
A mother’s lounge for feeding and soothing
A comfortable lobby area for family members
A toddler play zone for siblings
A restroom stocked with diapers and wipes
Many families travel from across the Seattle area, including Ballard, Queen Anne, Magnolia, Green Lake, Capitol Hill, and the greater Puget Sound region.
Because we are indoors, you never have to worry about Seattle’s unpredictable weather. Your session will be warm, calm, and completely stress-free.
What to Wear
Knowing what to wear to your newborn session is always a big concern for my clients.
I recommend:
Plain clothing in white, gray, cream, or soft neutral tones
No logos or bold patterns
Outfits that make you feel comfortable
Newborns are typically photographed in just a diaper or simple swaddle, but you’re welcome to bring:
Sentimental items like blanket, stuffies or rattles
A special outfit
Family heirlooms
Safety & Experience
With over two decades of experience photographing newborns, safety and comfort are my highest priorities, and one of my areas of expertise.
Before becoming a full-time photographer, I was a kindergarten teacher, and as a mother myself, I understand how important it is to feel completely at ease when choosing someone to work with your newborn.
You can trust that my studio is:
Always warm and sanitized
Calm and unhurried
Designed for newborn (and new parents) comfort
I follow your baby’s lead throughout the session. If they need to eat, we pause. If they need soothing, we soothe. Nothing is forced.
Why Families Choose Sandra Coan Photography
Families choose me as their Seattle newborn photographer because:
I’ve been in business since 1999. That’s 27 years of working with newborns and families, and why so many of my reviews call me “the baby whisperer”!
My work is respected in the community. In fact, one of my newborn portraits is a part of the Seattle Museum of History & Industry’s permanent collection.
I’m known for natural, baby-led posing
I create images that feel classic, not trendy
My sessions are easy and relaxed
What Happens At and After Your Session
The studio will be warm and ready when you arrive. I always start with the baby, and them move onto to photos of the baby with their sibling(s) (when present) and parents. Most session last about an hour.
About two weeks after your session, you’ll receive an online gallery of your images. If you order digital files, you will be able to download those directly from your gallery. If you ordered an album, you’ll hear from my studio manager who will help with album design.
Everything is streamlined to fit your busy life, and products are shipped directly to your home.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you provide props?
No. My style is minimal and focused on your baby and family connection.
Do you pose newborns?
Yes, but not in a traditional way.
I believe in a baby-led approach to posing.
That means your baby will only ever be placed in positions that are natural for babies to be in:
on their back
on their side
on their stomach
or in your arms.
What if my baby cries?
That’s completely normal. We allow time for feeding, soothing, and breaks as needed.
Can siblings be included?
Absolutely. I love photographing growing families and love including older brothers and sisters.
Where are you located?
My studio is in North Seattle at 310 NW 85th St, easily accessible from Ballard, Greenwood, Phinney Ridge, and surrounding neighborhoods.
