What to Expect From Your Studio Newborn Photo Session
If you’re planning a studio newborn photography session in Seattle, knowing what to expect ahead of time can make the experience feel easy and enjoyable.
My studio sessions are calm, warm, and entirely baby-led, meaning that I only ever place your baby baby in safe and natural positions (no props or elaborate posing here!)
Sessions are designed to keep both baby and parents relaxed while creating timeless newborn portraits.
A Calm, Baby-Led Experience
My newborn sessions are very different from traditional photo shoots. First of all, I practice a “baby-led” approach. That means:
We take breaks for feeding or comforting as needed
I use safe, natural poses for the baby. No props or elaborate posing.
I draw on almost 30 years of experience working with newborns and families.
How Long Does a Studio Newborn Session Take?
Most studio newborn sessions last around an hour. I’ve been working with newborns since 1999 and am very good at making sure your baby is comfortable and happy during the session.
Our time includes:
feeding
diaper changes
soothing
and photographing your baby at their own pace
What Happens When You Arrive at the Studio?
When you arrive at the studio, you’ll be welcomed into a warm, comfortable space designed specifically for newborns and families.
You can expect:
a temperature that keeps your baby cozy
seating for the entire family
a play area for older children
a relaxed environment where parents can sit back and rest
There’s no need to worry if your baby needs time to settle, this is all part of the process.
How Your Baby Is Photographed
Newborns are photographed just as they are, stretching, curling, yawning, and resting naturally.
Rather than placing babies into uncomfortable or unnatural positions, I:
observe how your baby moves
use “poses” that are natural for newborns— on their stomach, side, back or in their parents arms
make small adjustments for comfort and safety
This results in images that stand the test of time and reflect who your baby truly was in those first days.
What Parents and Siblings Can Expect
Parents and siblings are always welcome to be included in newborn sessions.
If you choose to participate:
posing is simple and natural
there’s no pressure to “perform”
Sessions are designed to move efficiently while still allowing space for connection and genuine moments.
What Should You Bring to a Newborn Session?
You don’t need to bring much.
Most families bring:
diapers and wipes
extra milk or formula if needed
a pacifier (if your baby uses one)
snack for older children
Simple, neutral clothing for parents and siblings photographs beautifully and keeps the focus on your baby.
Is Studio Newborn Photography Safe?
Safety is always my top priority.
Every session is:
baby-led
paced according to your newborn’s comfort
conducted in a clean, controlled environment
If a baby shows signs of discomfort, the setup is adjusted. Nothing is ever forced.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do parents need to help during the session?
Parents are welcome to relax. I’ve been photographing newborns for almost 30 years! You can trust that I know what I’m doing!
What if my baby is fussy?
Fussiness is completely normal. Sessions include time for soothing, feeding, and settling as needed.
Can siblings be included?
Yes. Sibling photos are typically done early in the session while children are fresh and engaged. And I have toys and books to help keep older entertained once photos are finished.
How soon will we see our photos?
Most families receive their online gallery within two weeks of the session.
A Simple, Stress-Free Experience
