Understanding the difference between the terms model light and a strobe light is also very important when learning how to work with strobe units.

Without your softbox on, your strobe unit will look something like this.

The light in the middle is your model light.

Model lights are great to have on as they allow you to see the light you will be working with and how that light is falling on your subject. They also allow you to see your highlights and shadows which will help when metering.

The donut shaped light around the model light is the strobe. That is the light that will flash when you fire your shutter.
