I personally believe you don’t need a ton of gear or even a studio to use strobes. My approach is very simple. I use:
•One studio light and stand
•A radio trigger and receiver
•A light modifier
•An external light meter
That’s it! Nothing fancy, not too much, and easy to set up in a studio or in a client’s home!
I shoot with a Contax 645 and a Hasselblad 503cw.
Just remember, people were using strobes long before digital cameras were around, so chances are any camera you have will be compatible with your lighting setup.
I work with the Bowen Esprit 500, an Alien Bee 1600 and an Elinchrom RX 600 in my studio. I've also worked with the Profoto strobes and they are amazing!
The good news is, once you understand the basics of working with strobes, you'll be able to work with any brand pretty easily.
